Bradwell CE (C) Infant School

We care, share and learn together.

Geography

The way we teach Geography is to develop knowledge of the world with an emphasis on the United Kingdom and the locality of Bradwell.

Children are taught to name and locate the seven continents and five oceans.

Children are taught to name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom.

Children are taught about the differences between a locality in the United Kingdom and a locality of similar size in a contrasting country, for example Africa or Australia.

Children are taught to understand and identify seasonal change, and locate hot and cold areas of the world.

Children are taught geographical vocabulary relating to physical features:

Beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather.

Children are taught geographical vocabulary relating to human features:

City, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port, harbour and shop.

Children use maps and globes to identify the United Kingdom and other countries, continents and oceans.

Children use compass points (North, South, East, West) and directional language (near, far, left, right) to locate features and routes on maps.

Children use aerial photographs and plans to devise simple maps using symbols as a key. They make maps of our school premises to record locations where they found dinosaur bones and places they are not allowed to go in school.

Children use simple fieldwork skills to study the school and local environment. We go on Autumn walks to identify seasonal change, and make journey sticks and maps with the Peak Park Ranger.
