Design & Technology

The way we teach Design and Technology is through practical activities. We design for different contexts and environments, and for different purposes. There are strong links with the Science curriculum in terms of the properties of materials and their uses.

Children are taught to:

Design purposeful, functional and appealing products based on given design criteria.

Use talking, drawing, templates and mock-ups to imagine, develop, model and communicate their ideas.

Select and use appropriate tools for a chosen task.

Select and use a range of materials, including construction kits, for a chosen task.

Explore and evaluate a range of existing products.

Evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria.

Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable.

Explore and use mechanisms to produce movement in their products.

Recent work has included the creation of bridges, pop-up cards, vehicles, houses and homes, rockets, and moving dinosaurs.

In food technology children have followed recipes and considered ingredients. They have made and tasted fruit salad, vegetable soup, sandwiches, sunshine toast, salad, bread and pizza.
